FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gale Browning has partnered with Moe Roddy and Red Dress Racing, to co- skipper The Red Dress in the double-handed class of this year’s historic centennial Newport Bermuda Race
“It’s pretty awesome that it’s only taken 100 years for two women to race together in this race. In fact, at the moment there are two boats whose crews consist of only women in the cruising division this year’s race. On a personal level, the trophy for the double-handed division is the Weld trophy. Phil Weld was my hero and the first person who opened my eyes and imagination to sailing single handed” …Moe.
Moe and Gale are both single-handed off shore veterans. Gale was the only American to compete in over 20 years in the 2001 Mini Transat, an amazing accomplishment for any sailor. Moe is a veteran of the 2005 Bermuda 1, 2. For both Moe and Gale this partnership is a natural progression. “We have the same determination and drive to compete in short handed off shore races. I can’t match Gale’s experience but I sure can match her determination!” …Moe.
“It’s a good partnership for me; both of my parents died from heart disease and I’m thrilled that I have an opportunity to bring attention to this disease” …Gale
Red Dress Racing strives to bring attention to the global problem of heart disease in women. Heart disease is the number one killer of women world wide, killing more women than all the cancers combined. Moe, who is a cardio thoracic nurse on an open heart surgical team, ties the motivation to change one’s life with her own efforts to sail single-handed. Red Dress Racing has been featured on PBS, NPR, various other TV programs, in Women's Day magazine, Town & Country, and many newspapers. Moe continues to do speaking tours around the country, in Bermuda, and the Caribbean, as she explains how heart disease is affecting women.
Red Dress Racing is a growing team; it now features Betsy Alison, five-time Rolex Yachts Woman of the year; Katie Ambach and The Mini Red Dress; and Gale Browning, veteran solo ocean racer. Betsy will concentrate on inshore racing, Katie on a mini transat campaign and Gale and Moe on short-handed and single-handed offshore ocean events. “All we need now is money” …Moe laughing!
Both Gale and Moe are available to talk at your yacht club. Contact Gale at gale@galebrowning.com and Moe at moeroddy@yahoo.com
In the meantime, if you are in Newport on April 30th be sure to attend the Heart Healthy wine tasting fund raiser for Red Dress Racing at the Newport Shipyard at 5 p.m. at Belles. Featured speaker will be Dr. Barbara Roberts, director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at the Miriam Hospital in Providence and author of the book, “How to Keep from Breaking Your Heart: What Every Woman Needs to Know About Heart Disease,” and be sure to watch The Red Dress’s progress in this year’s Newport Bermuda Race!
