Partnership Opportunities
2001 Mini-Transat
JoinTheTeam@2001mintransat.com
Brief
History
The
Mini-Transat Race is held every two years and is sailed single-handed
on 21-foot high performance ultralight boats from LaRochelle, France,
to Salvador, Brazil with a stopover in the Canary Islands. The race
was created by Bob Salmon in 1977 as a protest to the ridiculously
high budgets required to participate in solo offshore ocean races
such as the OSTAR. After the second edition of the race, Bob Salmon
was unable to raise sponsorship funds and the organization was turned
over to French authority.
The
Campaign
This
campaign for the 2001 Mini-Transat race is unique, bringing a lot
of media attention not only in the United States but in Europe as
well. It will be the first time in over 20 years that a US competitor
has sailed in this race and the first time a woman from the United
States has ever competed. The campaign benefits by having a boat
in the water 18 months before the start of the next race. The boat
is a 1999 Group Finot design that finished the 1999 Mini-Transat
race in 9th place out of 70 competitors proving that it is capable
of a 1st place finish with only modest improvements and a dedicated
training program.
The
total projected budget for the campaign is $225,000.
